All or nothing. Project finished on Sep 2, 2018 at 13:57.
After a considerable effort that has taken place over many years we are pleased to announce the opening of the Vasulka Kitchen Brno experimental research center. Its goal is to maintain the legacy of the world renown video and electronic art pioneers, Woody and Steina Vasulka. Their work has inspired, and continues to do so, many individuals to explore the nature of new electronic and digital media.
A celebratory launch of the Vasulka Kitchen Brno Center for New Media Art will také place at the Brno House of Arts on October 30th, 2018. Brno's kitchen is inspired by the Vasulka's original Theater for Electronic Media, The Kitchen which opened its doors to the public in New York in 1971. The Vasulka Chamber, a dedicated space for the preservation and presentation of the Vasulka's legacy, which opened in 2014 at the National Gallery of Iceland in Reykjavík, Steina's hometown, has been an inspiration and is a partner organization.
The center's establishment has been supported by the City of Brno and the Brno House of Arts, located at Malinovského nám. 2, will provide a dedicated space for its activities. A condition of this gracious support is that we procure a significant contribution to support the full range of planned activities. For this reason we are asking the community of contemporary artists, researchers and students of new media art, and Brno patriots who believe the Vasulka's legacy should be honored and developed in the same manner as Janaček, Mendel or Gödel to contribute to its successful realization.
The Brno House of Arts has granted Vasulka Kitchen Brno an exclusive space in the Brno city center which we intend to renovate according to the center's focus and needs. The space includes a study area where a digital archive of the Vasulka's life work will be accessible, and an exhibition of works on permanent loan (Light Revisited, Lucifer´s Commision, and Triads) will be opened.
The architectural and interier design emphasizes the space's purpose while reflecting the importance of the site as a lively site of activity reminiscent of the Vasulka's approach to their work. We would need an additional 150 000 CZK to realize the project. Through your generous support and philanthropy you can significantly contribute to the realisation of Brno's experimental kitchen specializing in the Vasulka's gourmet collaborative recipes.
Brno's Kitchen will officially open its doors on October 30th, 2018. In addition to an exhibition of works on permanent loan and a newly renovated space, the center is preparing a celebratory opening program. The center's importance not only for Brno but for the Vasulkas themselves is illustrated by Woody and Steina's presence at the opening. They have decided to embark on the long arduous journey from Santa Fe, New Mexico to Brno to support and commemorate our efforts.
At the celebratory opening Michael Bielický, student of „father of video art“ Nam June Paik and founder of the studio of New Media at Prague's Academy, will present his work. Bielický is yet another significant Czech new media artist that has had international success. Artists and musicians Brno's Bastl Instruments artists and musicians will perform as well. Peter Weibel, director of the Ars Electronica festival of electronic art in Linz, director of the ZKM Center for art and media in Karlsruhe, Germany, and one of the first European theorists of video as an artistic tool, has also confirmed his participation. We also plan to „cook up“ a delicious smorgasbord for all our supporters!
We also need your generosity and support to realize this event. The overall cost for a program of this scope is approximately 200 000 CZK. We're missing 100 000 CZK. If you find the opening program exciting and would love to see it in action please consider supporting us!
In 2014 we established the Vašulka Kitchen Brno association, its members focused on developing an archive and center dedicated to the legacy of electronic art pioneers Woody and Steina Vasulka. Our aim is to establish a rich program of lectures, exhibitions, symposia and educational programs for the local and international public. From the beginning our goal has been to create a respectable site which could house the Vasulkas digital archive of work and documents making it available to students, researchers, artists, curators, and the public at large.
