How did it begin?

Květinové lahůdkářství (Flower Deli) loves SOFFA and SOFFA loves Květinové lahůdkářství, so we decided to have a love child. And just like a real baby, it will take almost a year before it sees the light of day. Here in the Czech Republic we have not run across a really nice and well-designed calendar for many years. One dark autumn evening we got the idea to create such a calendar for people, their walls and perhaps even their even pets. The first photo was taken in November 2014 and last one will be taken in early October of this year.

What is our objective?

We want a beautiful, extraordinary calendar that will be a delight to look at every single day during 2016. The calendar has been designed so that the large photographs (free of numbers or text) can be removed and framed like a picture. Each of the twelve flower still lifes will embody the atmosphere of each specific month. We will donate a part of the proceeds – CZK 150 from each purchased or pre-ordered calendar – to the Proměny Foundation, which has been striving for the past ten years to make our country more beautiful and, by doing so, make even us more beautiful, especially on the inside.

Details

The calendar will be printed on high-quality, A2-size Fedgrigoni brand paper (150 g/m2). A separate sheet of paper will back each photograph, and this sheet will contain the numbers, a poem and a botanical drawing of one of the flowers appearing in the still life. As the sheet will be slightly longer than the photograph, the printed numbers will be visible under the photograph. This design will keep the photograph clean, allowing you to mount and frame it. All photos in calendar by talented Lina Németh.

Who are we?

SOFFA magazine

We are a young bi-monthly magazine that tries to find the best and the most beautiful in the Czech Republic and Central Europe: sophisticated design, inspirational stories about people, unknown interiors and the hidden beauties of places worth visiting. SOFFA is mainly about inspiration. Each issue has original content based on original photographs. The first issue of the magazine was published on-line in December 2013. The first printed issue was published in February 2015. An iPad version of SOFFA has existed since April 2015. The printed version is published in English only; the iPad version in both Czech and English. We at SOFFA know how to enjoy the ordinary and small things in life – learn how with us!

Květinové lahůdkářství (Flower Deli)

We are two enthusiasts who love gardening and flowers. All of the flowers that appear in our bouquets have been grown in our garden without chemicals or artificial fertilizers or collected sparingly from the countryside around the town of Žebrák. In our bouquets we like to let the natural beauty of the flowers come across. We are also interested in the atmosphere that can be conveyed using seasonal flowers. As curators we peruse what nurseries and the countryside have to offer and choose the most beautiful flower delicacies, which then appear in our bouquets. It is a never-ending search and a joyous endeavour.

Proměny Foundation

The Proměny Foundation is a Czech private non-profit organisation which, since 2006, has been helping to transform the urban environment with the involvement of local people and to raise public awareness about architecture, landscaping and the impact our surroundings can have on us. We involve students of architecture and art schools in projects. This is a chance for them to work on real assignments and to put the knowledge gained in their studies into practice. We believe that a high-quality – that is, a beautiful, healthy and functional – urban environment has a positive impact on all of us.

Why are we doing it?

We simply believe in beauty – not only of things, but also of fleetingness of moments and of the transiency of the seasons. Beauty that can in fact be captured through photography. We are of the opinion that beautiful and genuinely made things cultivate us when we come into contact with them. The costs associated with printing the calendar are high. For this reason we have decided to finance the first edition with your help. Printing on high-quality, large-format paper constitutes a major part of the costs (about CZK 90,000). Packaging the calendar so that it gets to you safely and undamaged is also a big expense (CZK 50 per piece). As the calendar aims to show flowers growing in each season, work on it is taking place over the course of the year. It requires a team of people who do the flower arrangements, styling, photography and production. There are other costs as well, such as petrol and materials. Furthermore, as mentioned above, we would also like to donate CZK 150 to the Proměny Foundation from each calendar sold. Creating such a calendar is a lot of fun, but a lot of hard work as well!
