THE STORY OF STANICA SVET / or from interest in spontaneous art to its preservation and accessibility
One of the inspirations for the exhibition Stanica Svet was an interest in the works of untrained artists, which coincidentally awoke in me years ago in Slovakia, when I visited the 2nd Triennial of Instinct Art in Bratislava in 1972 for study purposes. Since then, in addition to my profession as a theater artist and heritage conservationist, I have devoted my entire life to collecting the artistic expressions of marginal artists, sometimes also called outsiders. Part of my collecting also included mapping and documenting various expressions of “pure-hearted artists”, which include creative self-made people, beautifying their homes and their immediate surroundings, sometimes to the point of creating a special work of art. Sometimes it takes the form of an architectural, decorative form, or it is a garden or open-air sculpture gallery. There are hundreds of such original environments all over the world that arouse the interest of the audience and often become the subject of monument protection and are presented as cultural monuments.
An example of this enlightened approach can be France in particular, where these areas become a sought-after destination for cultural tourism and are used for various educational events or concerts. It was a surprise and a joyful discovery for me when, in 2021, based on a tip from a Slovak friend, I visited the organic farm in Východná, where dozens of artifacts-models of iconic buildings of world architecture were temporarily stored, created over thirty years by a shoemaker and later a railwayman, a native of Východná, Mr. Martin Sabaka (1926 - 2016), which led to my efforts to make them accessible. The support of the creator's family, friends and the management of the farm in Východná directed our joint efforts to create and operate the Stanica Svet exhibition. My efforts were also supported by a well-known expert, researcher in the field of outsider art and curator emeritus of the American institution SPACES, Ms. JO FARB HERNÁNDEZ:
Dear Pavel,
as you know, as Director Emerita of SPACES, a non-profit organization internationally recognized as the largest and most comprehensive archive of self-taught artistic environments, I document and advocate for these works around the world. That is why I was delighted to hear from you about Martin Sabaka’s work in Slovakia.
I hope that in Slovakia, renowned for the creativity of its citizens, the magnificent beauty of its surroundings, and the recognition that art and artists are an important part of all Slovak culture, you will be successful in your efforts to work with the family and community to support, maintain, and preserve Martin Sabaka’s work.
As we have discussed together, I believe that the preservation and public access to these sculptures will serve as a catalyst that will bring significant cultural momentum to the area by attracting culturally engaged tourists who generally spend more money and time in their location. I am sure that the potential economic benefits for the village and the entire region will be extremely positive if the site and sculptures are properly cared for.
Thank you, as always, for your good work in identifying, documenting, and helping to save these artistic environments, Pavle.
And as always, let me know what else I can do to help you.
Best regards,
Jo Farb Hernández, ředitel Emerita, SPACES, www.spacesarchives.org
Based on my previous collecting and traveling experiences, I recognized the quality of this unique creator's legacy and decided to revitalize his works and make them accessible to people again. To create the first exhibition of outsider art in Slovakia, which would be a reminder of the creative life of Mr. Martin Sabaka and a place where visitors could be introduced to this type of artistic expression (also called art brut) in almost perfect symbiosis with the ecological economy of Farma Východná, whose management showed great interest in the implementation of this project called STANICA SVET MARTINA SABAKA.
WHO ARE WE?
We are the STANICA SVET association, composed of collectors, artists, educators, enthusiasts and admirers of folk art and spontaneous creation, who want to preserve this truly unique artistic environment as a testament to the inspiring creativity of an untrained creator, a native of Východná, who did not have to travel to see the world's architectural wonders, but created them in front of his house by recycling materials found in a dump for himself and for all of us.
WHAT IS OUR GOAL?
Through its activities at Hithit, the STANICA SVET association primarily wants to obtain financial resources for the necessary restoration of the works and appropriate technical equipment for the exhibition (renovation of the hall, lighting of exhibits, etc.) and its operation, so that it can successfully fulfill its main purpose, namely awakening the inspiration of young and older visitors to create in the form of tours and creative workshops.
The Stanica Svet exhibition is an imaginary stop under the High Tatras for creative people who like to make their dreams come true. It is a collection of artistic artifacts created from recycled materials and concrete by the original untrained author, shoemaker, railwayman and pensioner Martin Sabaka in the village of Východná. In 2023, the Stanica Svet civic association, together with the management of the Východná Farm, made this first Slovak environmental singular artistic environment available directly on the premises of the biofarm, presenting dozens of impressive scaled-down iconic buildings of world architecture. This completed one stage of rescuing and making accessible the unique work of the creative native of Východná.
We believe and are convinced that it is necessary to protect not only high art in stone museums and galleries, but also the spontaneous creations of untrained creators, who usually hide in their work the magical immediacy, authenticity and cleansing poetry, so important for our lives. In our efforts to make Mr. Sabaka's artistic environment in Východná accessible, we are supported by the well-known Czech sculptor and painter František Skála, who is one of the great admirers of spontaneous art and its creators, as well as the great musician Michal Smetanka and the excellent photographer Robert Kočan, as you can see in the short videos at the end of our description.
A financial contribution can bring you joy that you have also participated in the realization of a creative person's dream, supported the rescue of the valuable work of a spontaneous artist, and in addition, you can understand it as a symbolic gift to the modest authentic creator Martin Sabaka on his upcoming 100th birthday.
We are appealing to all creative people who are attracted by the spontaneous creative work of autodidacts and who are willing to contribute to the completion of Station Svet ve Východná. The amount can be increased according to your possibilities. Thank you!
