The International Festival of Local Televisions was set up in 1995 thanks to the changes in political and economic system. It is the only festival of its kind in Europe. We need some additional financies especially to cover the film festival costs.

How it all began

When one of the first local televisions in Slovakia was given a  license for broadcasting in 1995, it was clear that it could not afford to buy programmes or to broadcast the same way as large televisions. Back in the day the local televisions were isolated and didn’t have any information about each other. And so the idea of organizing the festival was born, festival for exchanging programmes, experience and information. 

What is our goal?

In Košice, Slovakia and in Europe the festival is the broadest platform of connecting various cultural values and dialogue. Our goal is to create a place of permanent dialogue, exchange of ideas and experience and creative confrontation of authors of audio-visual programmes. Television production is influenced by its environment. Its quality is then dependent on the courage of professionals and experts, especially on the competence of the television workers themselves.

Presence in the festival means a unique experience and a possibility of direct professional and creative inspiration.

Details

The Festival has defined the idea of local and regional media in Central Europe as well as in a wider European context.

The Festival consists of 4 separate parts:

I. “Golden Beggar”: Filmmakers in Europe came to regard the main prize of the Festival as a prestigious acknowledgement of an achievement of audiovisual artists from all over the world. There are three competition sections: Production Company, Young Authors and Local Televisions. Content-wise, the festival films are rather unique as they bring information about unknown regions, unusual fates and events which reflect current social and societal processes in Europe.     

II. The film festival is focused on Central and Eastern European cinema. It serves as a platform for the presentation of the best festival competition entries, all of which are premiered.

III. Series of workshops on current issues led by top media experts form an important part of the Festival. The aim is to explore the topics televisions and independent producers should bring and the ways of doing so.

IV. Accompanying cultural events presenting mainly the culture of South-East Balkans.

The public can look forward to seeing a Serbian choir consisting of 40 members perform various songs and styles in the breathtaking setting of the oldest church in the city, the Košice Dominican Church.

Ster Century Cinemas visitors will have a unique chance to watch films from all over the world which they would not be able to see anywhere else.

Who are we?

The Festival is organised by the City TV Foundation which was established a year before TV Naša, the festival co-organiser, started to broadcast. We are a team of people who feel strongly about our TV and its reputation as that of a local television which can compete with the so-called “big TV stations”, especially so in terms of content. We want local viewers to know that the TV is for them, about them and made by people around them. 

Why are we doing it?

We trust in the power of local broadcasting and we support the “think globally, act locally” approach. Thousands of local TV stations exist all over the world. Our ambition is to welcome them in one place, in the city of Košice, where they can share information and discuss the local broadcasting philosophy.
