Who is Zdeněk Trnka?

Personality of our region - a great pedagogue (he taught until he was 80 years old), composer, conductor and intellectual. 

Zdeněk Trnka has taught 41 classes (it’s 41 years of graduates, which is almost two generations), even I am his grateful student. However, during the "normalization" times of former regime, forced him to leave school and he was completely banned from public life. Public performance of his music was obstructed and professional musicians could not perform his compositions, although they were mostly rated as very good. He was not a member of the OSA nor could he be accepted because his music was not performed, allegedly because he had no formal musical education. And the fact that he kept educating himself, that he paid private lessons with renowned composers, had no bearing.

Professor Zdeněk Trnka, laureate of the Trutnov Cultural Prize for 2014, frequently met with numerous cultural celebrities.  He values most his friendship with poet Jaroslav Seifert, who also visited him in Suchovršice where Zdeněk Trnka still lives. Let me also remind friendship with conductor Václav Talich and academic painter J. W. Mezerová. He also knew Václav Havel. Concert "Songs by Zdeněk Trnka & Jaroslav Seifert Verses", which successfully took place in September 2013 in Trutnov, represented a small piece of Zdeněk Trnka’s wide-ranging work.

Zdeněk Trnka is currently experiencing a difficult period. 30 years after the death of his beloved wife, died his second life partner. The more we strive to successfully organize a concert to celebrate his 90th birthday. The concert program will consist of his opera and symphonic music. It will be held at the beginning of the Advent, therefore Christmas Mass „Nesem vám noviny“ is included in the program.  More than 25 years after the Velvet revolution, this respected personality, pedagogue and composer certainly deserves some recognition. And this concert gives a great opportunity. Perhaps the injustices caused might be partially repaired, with the opportunity to hear his music live.  And there is no better gift for a composer, than to hear his own music at a concert.  All this will be possible with the help of the Instant Film Orchestra along with their Mikrochor led by the patron of the project and conductor Varhan Orchestrovič Bauer.

What we want and why?

We are looking for sponsors and talk to numerous NGO’s and foundations and we are asking you too! We want to introduce to you another part the work of our composer and pay homage to him.  Through crowdfunding, we need to cover at least the amount of CZK 200 000 out of a total budget of 450 000 CZK. Let us join and contribute each one of us according to our ability, so that our idea becomes a reality. Our reward will be the beautiful music and joy and maybe even tears of happiness. The budget includes honorariums for artists, costs associated with the transcription of the sheet music, transportation and concert promotion. As a thank you for your generosity, we will provide gifts related to Zdeněk Trnka and his work e.g. pictures from the concert 2013, copies of originals and manuscripts of songs, a book “Salin dar”, which Zdeněk Trnka reviewed, premiere recording of the Music for pleasure and also tickets to this concert.

Recording from the concert will be used in a documentary that I shoot since 2005. So please join the realization of the gala concert, maybe you will have opportunity to find yourselves in the documentary.

Concerts are scheduled for November 27th 2015 to the Community Centre UFFO in Trutnov. Afternoon rehearsal will be offered primarily to students and seniors from retirement homes.
